Food As Medicine

Did you know that the United States is at the epicenter of a global obesity epidemic and that the wave has not yet crested? The world is following our lead, and it is the link between obesity and chronic illness to follow that is the issue.

74% of American adults today are obese or overweight (David Katz, Yale-Griffin Prevention Resource Center). Eating poorly and lack of physical exercise are at the basis of this.

Eating a healthy food plan is not just about will-power. It is about skill-power. Our goal at The LightHeart Institute is to empower you to increase your energy and vitality whether you simply have a vague feeling you could be feeling better, or are dealing with a chronic or life-altering illness.

We provide education, consultation and support to help you increase your health and energy.

Through our Food As Medicine program, working in both individual and group formats we promote the consumption of colorful, whole foods that are locally grown and clean (based in restorative agriculture). We teach self-awareness and self-care as the central component for increasing health and vibrancy. (Self-care is the best health care!)

Food As Medicine is for you if:

  1. You have a suspicion you could be feeling better or have more energy, but aren't sure how.
  2. You feel confused by diet fads and aren't sure which foods are the right foods for you to eat.
  3. You are dealing with a chronic, acute or life-altering illness and want to learn how to be proactive in your recovery.
  4. You have an open mind as to the difference you can make in increasing your health.

Several years ago while working with clients in a Holistic Psychotherapy setting it became abundantly clear that those who shifted away from the Standard American Diet (SAD) eliminating white sugar, white flour, and other poisons, made much quicker progress healing emotional wounds.

From that point forward we became extremely interested in teaching, promoting and supporting our client's journeys toward physical health and vitality. (We define health as high energy, vitality, qi.)

With new discoveries in the field of psychoneuroimmunology, science tells us what granny knew all along: that the mind influences the body and the body influences the mind. Physical health plays an enormous role in emotional well-being and emotional health plays an enormous role in physical well-being. (For emotional health see Holistic Psychotherapy)

In our society we are often taught to look to other people to take care of our health. However, to increase your vitality the greatest gift you can give yourself is to take responsibility for your health, and teach your children and grandchildren to do the same.

There are many ways you can do this. One primary way is to pay attention to what you put in, and on, your body. Hippocrates, the first physician known to as the "Father of Medicine," after whom the Hippocratic Oath is named, is famous for his saying, "Let food be thy medicine, and let thy medicine be food."

In our Food As Medicine program you will be introduced to principles and practices of Integrative Medicine, including greater self-awareness and self-care to increase your options so that you can empower yourself and your family toward greater health.

You are what you eat, absorb, digest and eliminate. What you consume today determines your health next year.
